## Latest news - **[03.10.2025]** In a [[Publications#^Warnau2025|new perspective paper]] we outline the research that is needed to find out whether evaporation enhancement by technology can lead to significant enhancements in precipitation in water scarce regions. This work is embedded in the [Wetsus Natural Water Production](https://www.wetsus.nl/research-themes/natural-water-production/) theme and the first paper of the PhD-project of [[The team#^team-Sarah|Sarah Warnau]]. ![](figures/warnau2025.jpg) - **[23.07.2025]** [[SLOCS#^output-Reeze2025|New paper]] published on machine learning-accelerated ray tracing for surface solar irradiance. We show that denoising poorly converged Monte-Carlo ray tracing fields is as effective in getting converged fields as running the ray tracer with orders of magnitude more samples. ![](figures/reeze2025.jpg) - **[17.06.2025]** We are this week at the *AMS Boundary Layers and Turbulence* meeting in Torino. - [Tuesday at 9.00](https://ams.confex.com/ams/25BLT/meetingapp.cgi/Paper/460232) a talk on making rain with evaporation technology by [[The team#^team-Sarah|Sarah Warnau]] - [Wednesday at 15.15](https://ams.confex.com/ams/25BLT/meetingapp.cgi/Paper/461868) a poster on simulations of wildfire plumes by [[The team#^team-Tristan|Tristan Roelofs]] - [Friday at 9.30](https://ams.confex.com/ams/25BLT/meetingapp.cgi/Paper/461422) a talk on energy spectra in realistic large-eddy simulations by [[The team#^team-Bernard|Bernard Postema]] - [Friday at 14.15](https://ams.confex.com/ams/25BLT/meetingapp.cgi/Paper/461188) a talk on the impact of 3D radiation on clouds and turbulence by [[The team#^team-mirjam|Mirjam Tijhuis]] - [Friday at 15.00](https://ams.confex.com/ams/25BLT/meetingapp.cgi/Paper/461863) an overview talk of the [[SLOCS]] project by [[The team#^team-Chiel|Chiel van Heerwaarden]] - **[23.04.2025]** [[SLOCS#^output-Mol2025|New paper]] on the mechanisms driving surface solar irradiance variability by [[The team#^team-Wouter|Wouter Mol]]. We show that nearly all patterns of variability can be described using four mechanisms (figure from paper). The work will be presented at EGU on [Tuesday, 29 Apr, 09:30–09:40 (CEST), Room F2](https://meetingorganizer.copernicus.org/EGU25/EGU25-8614.html). ![](figures/mol2025_mechanisms.png) - **[09.04.2025]** As part of the [[EWED]] project, we analysed the fire plume of the destructive Palisades fire in Los Angeles in January 2025. Our simulations capture the strong wind gusts (blue / green colors) and the highly turbulent nature of this plume. ![](figures/palisades_fire.mp4) - **[05.12.2024]** In the [[EWED]] project meeting we have been discussion the formation of pyrocumulus clouds, leading to escalating fires during the 2024 Varnavas fires in Greece. The [[MicroHH]] simulation below shows the formation of such clouds under strong wind conditions. ![](figures/movie_fire_deep.mp4) - **[14.10.2024]** After seven years of work, we released [[MicroHH]] version 2.0.
